Is there a huge difference between the TI-89 Titanium and the TI-84 Plus Sliver Edition?
Posted by: raysmithtx Post date: December 5th, 2009Are there totally different functions on the TI-89 Titanium? Is it a good idea to jump from a TI-83 calculator to a TI-89 Titanium? WHICH ONE DO YOU PREFER? Thanks for the help everyone.

Well unless you are doing some serious graduate level math or actually know all the things the calculator is doing, it is probably not prudent to upgrade. A TI-83 is fine for most purposes. Unless there is some feature you desperately need, then you are fine.

I use a TI-84 Plus Silver, and I LOVE it. The only problem that I’ve found is: when you’re doing trigonometry like you’re finding angles in circles, you won’t get an exact answer, just a decimal. For example, instead of the answer being sqrt3/2 like you’re SUPPOSED to write it, they’ll give you .866…………
But that’s my only complaint. The TI-89 is a more advanced calculator. It should be useful if you plan to do like college level math above AP Calculus and AP Statistics. Also, it’s so advanced that it’s not allowed on some tests like the ACT and some teachers don’t allow people to use those calculators in their classes.
It all depends on you. Are you going to do higher math after taking AP Calculus and AP Statistics? If yes, I would suggest using a TI-84 Plus Silver now and getting the TI-89 Titanium after those AP classes.
I know people who have went through college and did just fine with the TI-84 plus silver, but the highest they did was AP Calculus and AP Statistics.
If you really are going to take those super advanced math classes after classes like AP Calc then sell your TI-84 in a couple years and use that money to get the TI-89. Plus, the TI-89 will be cheaper in a couple years too.
